History & Origins
Yapese is an Oceanic language within the Austronesian language family, though it has some unique features that set it apart from other Micronesian languages. Linguistic evidence suggests that Yapese may have been influenced by both Oceanic and Western Austronesian languages.
The language has been spoken on Yap, an island in the western Caroline Islands, for thousands of years. Despite colonial influences from Spanish, German, Japanese, and American administrations, Yapese has maintained remarkable resilience and continues to be the primary language of daily life for most Yapese people.
