History & Origin
French is a Romance language descended from Vulgar Latin. It evolved from Gallo-Romance, the Latin spoken in Gaul, particularly in Northern France. The earliest documents in French date from the 9th century.
French became France's official language in 1539 and has spread globally through colonization and cultural influence. Today, it's an official language in 29 countries across Europe, North America, Africa, and Oceania, and serves as a working language in numerous international organizations including the UN, EU, NATO, and the International Olympic Committee.
