History & Origin
Spanish (Español or Castellano) is a Romance language that evolved from Vulgar Latin in the Iberian Peninsula. It developed in the central-northern region of Spain (Castile) and gradually spread throughout the country and beyond through conquest and colonization.
The language began to take form around the 9th century, with the earliest documents in Old Spanish dating from the 10th century. Spanish expanded globally during Spain's colonial period (15th-19th centuries), spreading to the Americas, parts of Africa, and the Philippines. Today, it's the official language in 21 countries and a significant minority language in several others, including the United States with over 41 million speakers.
