History & Origin
German belongs to the West Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family. It evolved from Proto-Germanic and Old High German, with standardization beginning with Martin Luther's Bible translation in the 16th century.
Modern Standard German (Hochdeutsch) emerged in the 18th-19th centuries and is now the official language in Germany, Austria, and parts of Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. German has significantly influenced English, with many loanwords in science, philosophy, and technology.
