History & Origins
Te Reo Māori is an Eastern Polynesian language, belonging to the Austronesian language family. It arrived in New Zealand (Aotearoa) with Polynesian settlers approximately 700 years ago.
After European colonization, the language faced severe decline, but since the 1970s Māori cultural renaissance, there have been significant efforts to revitalize Te Reo. In 1987, it was declared an official language of New Zealand, and today, it's taught in schools and increasingly used in public life.
