About the Carolinian Language
Carolinian (or Refaluwasch) is a Micronesian language spoken primarily in the Northern Mariana Islands, particularly on the island of Saipan. The language is part of the Trukic subgroup of Micronesian languages within the Austronesian language family. There are approximately 3,000-5,000 native speakers of Carolinian, many of whom are descendants of migrants from the Caroline Islands who settled in the Northern Marianas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Carolinian is closely related to Chuukese (Trukese) and other languages of the Caroline Islands, but it has developed its own distinctive features due to its isolation and contact with Chamorro, the other indigenous language of the Northern Mariana Islands. The language has two main dialects: the Northern Dialect (influenced by languages from Yap and Chuuk) and the Southern Dialect (with influences from Satawal and other Caroline Islands).
As a minority language with official status in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Carolinian plays an important role in preserving cultural identity and heritage. At ANA Lokalize, we understand the cultural significance of Carolinian and provide professional translation services that honor the linguistic nuances and cultural context of this unique Micronesian language.
